"Looking Good - Feeling Great"
One of my favourite definitions of a brand is this:
A brand is always consistent so you know what you are getting or as Andy Milligan, leading brand consultant puts it
‘A brand is a symbol that guarantees a particular experience’
Your personal image, which is part of your unique brand, represents the combined perceptions that people have about you, i.e. how they see you. It is the customer’s perception rather than your intention which creates your image and brand, that the customer holds in their mind.
As I mentioned in my Image and Impact For Men:
Personal Branding is about building a relationship with your target audience, finding out their needs and telling them how you can fulfil them. The best way to market yourself is to build your personal brand
Here are some examples of strong personal brands from a variety of sectors:
Richard Branson, Madonna, Tiger Woods, Jackie Chan, David Beckham, The Queen, Barak Obama, David Hockney, Kylie Minogue, Gordon Ramsay.
Here is how I can help you create your own strong personal brand:
Market yourself effectively through Personal Branding
We are all familiar with the big corporate brands of the major players;
Coca Cola, Pepsi, Microsoft, British Airways, MacDonald’s, Pizza Express, The Virgin Group etc their brands provide strong messages to the consumer which encompass the companies values and the product promise.
A brand is a promise kept.
Your brand is what people say about you when you are out of the room.
Some people have never seen the need for personal marketing. They do their best at work and are promoted every few years; their job title tells you everything you need to know about them.
That was the case back in the 50’s and 60’s when the company man would have one or possibly two jobs in his lifetime, but all this changed in the 70’s and 80’s when recession, restructuring and the advent of IT eliminated large swathes of middle managers and so the ‘job for life’ was no more. From here on in, one could expect to move through several different organisations in a lifetime risking redundancy or fixed term contracts at every turn, so necessitating the constant need to sell yourself and your skill set several times over in a working life. Many nowadays end up setting up their own business, which is when the real need for personal marketing and Personal Branding really begins.
Clothes don’t make the man, but they have got many a man a good job.
